  I did a placement here as a student nurse. The care is...well, shocking. Ignoring buzzers, telling patients to urinate on their pad instead of assisting them to the toilet. Staff uncaring, nursing staff told me to "suck it up" if I tried to report anything. Honestly, if any of my relatives were placed here...I would take them out asap. When the charge nurse isn't there, all the staff have their break at once in the dining area and ignore the buzzers. Some serious training is needed for the staff here.

  My mother stayed here (in the Rosebery Wing) from 5 June 2014 under a Compulsory Treatment Order. Nothing wrong with her other than dementia, but the consultant psychiatrist did not approve of my care for my mother and used the Mental Health Act to remove her. The hospital is set in pleasant green surroundings (which patients can see but are not allowed out into, even with relatives) and the interior is clean and fairly bright. There is a pleasant courtyard. One Activities Co-ordinator is often seen around, even during the afternoon visiting period, but many of the activities which I have seen (eg Connect 4) attract little interest from patients. Most patients appear to have their own rooms, although a few have only a small area curtained-off from the main corridor. Staff are dedicated and professional in their attitude but I do not think they really understand dementia, or human rights. The tv or radio is often left on unsuitable, noisy channels which could only be of interest to the nurses themselves. I noticed a male doctor/psychiatrist trying comfort a sobbing recent arrival by telling her "You are in hospital, you cannot go home because you are not well." Patients are often put in deep reclining chairs from which they have no hope of escape. Twice when I've pointed out patients struggling to get out of them to walk or use the toilet, staff just settle them back into the chair. My own mother is discouraged from walking on the instructions of the consultant psychiatrist, who has no expertise in physical ailments. GPs visit every week, but seem reluctant to challenge the psychiatrist.
